Highlights of the Week :Selling Abhisit

The Democrat Party launches a national multimedia campaign featuring leader Abhisit Vejjajiva on Sunday.

Its television commercial about the young politician debuted on Saturday. In addition to television, the campaign blitz includes billboards and other media, according to Theptai Senpong, party election-management centre spokesman.

Poll delay on the cards

Caretaker Senate Speaker Suchon Chaleekrua tomorrow meets legal advisers and Election Commission secretary-general Ekachai Warunprapha to determine election-related difficulties that could arise from the absence of a commission.

They will discuss the possibility of postponing the October 15 poll. Ahead of any general election, the EC is required to issue orders in preparation for voting and form groups to prevent vote-buying. If the selection of new EC members cannot be completed in time, it may be necessary to seek a delay.

EC selection starts

Screening of nominees to fill five Election Commission seats starts Thursday after judges name the candidates. Nominations will be submitted to the Supreme Court, which will select 10 candidates. The Senate will then pick five new commissioners.
