His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej has been recovering satisfactorily after undergoing surgery to treat lumbar spinal stenosis.
The medical team yesterday described His Majesty's general condition as good and found the muscles that control the movement to hips, knees, ankles and toes to be strong, according to the Royal Household Bureau. His Majesty underwent surgery at Siriraj Hospital on July 20. Since being admitted to hospital, a large number of people clad in yellow shirts have flocked to the medical centre daily. Based on messages recorded by well-wishers, His Majesty, received 353,080 get well calls from July 21 to last Saturday, or an average of 40,000 callers per day. The number of well-wishers was apparently high yesterday when family members dressed in yellow arrived to wish His Majesty a speedy recovery. Former prime minister Suchinda Kraprayoon was among the callers. A 10-year-old girl, Lalita Sap-wattana, came with a framed picture of His Majesty. She painted the drawing, which stood 6-metres tall. Many people also came with gifts to His Majesty, leaving them with Royal Household Bureau officials. Atiporn Senawong, the daughter of the late Aua Suntornsanan, led 50 singers from Suntaraporn School to pay their respects at the Siriraj Hospital too. Aua composed many well known songs and was a key member of the legendary Suntaraporn Band. Atiporn said the Suntaraporn Foundation would hold a concert to commemorate the Sixtieth Year of His Majesty's Accession to the Throne on September 24 at Thammasat University's Auditorium. Proceeds from the show would be presented to His Majesty. "We have two songs composed for His Majesty's jubilee," Atiporn said. Their Majesties the King and the Queen yesterday offered many types of food to well-wishers. On the occasion of his birthday on July 28, HRH Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn also provided free food for well wishers at Siriraj Hospital. Charoen Pokphand Group, AIS and the Electricity Authority of Thailand distributed food sets to the well-wishers. HM Queen Sirikit, accompanied by royal family members, left Siriraj Hospital at around 5.20pm yesterday for laser surgery at Rutnin Eye Hospital. Her Majesty was scheduled to receive the surgery on her retina later yesterday.
