TOT and True to tout hi-tech at ICT Expo

TOT Plc and True Corp Plc both expect this week's ICT Expo to enhance their hi-tech images.

True, which is both a concessionaire of TOT and also the state agency's competitor, will showcase the concept "The world of convergence by True" at its booth.

The Information and Communications Technology Ministry will host the Bangkok International ICT Expo 2006 from Wednesday through Sunday at the Impact Muang Thong Thani exhibition centre.

Internet Protocol TV services, music downloads and the "True Net Talk" Internet calling service will be on display at the True booth. The latest advances allow viewers to order video on demand while simultaneously surfing the Internet and making a phone call.

A source at True said the real highlight of the booth would be something called "interactive shadow", but would not give further details in order to surprise visitors.

True says its competitiveness is built on the synergy among its various units, from cellular phones to pay-TV and broadband Internet services.

TOT for its part says the fair will be its place to show that it has first-rate technology, a fact of which the public seems not to be aware.

The state agency's booth is divided into four zones: Digital Living, Digital Learning, Digital Business and VIP Community.

In the Digital Living zone, visitors can enjoy online games, music downloads and a "dining table" that will produce a variety of content, such as CNN news, at the touch of a finger on pictures of different foods. The content is transmitted to the table by a broadband satellite signal from the iPSTAR satellite.

The Digital Learning Zone educates the visitors about e-learn-

ing technology, while the Digital Business Zone will display a cor-porate room equipped with such

telecom technologies as Web conferencing and PC-to-phone calling service.

VIP Community demonstrates wireless Internet technology and also Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, the relatively new wireless system built around identifying tags that carried by people or embedded in objects.

Visitors can find more thrills at the booth of the China's telecom-equipment supplier Huawei Technologies, which the company says will showcase the next generation of telecom products.

Among Huawei's highlights are the WiMAX broadband wireless technology and 3G mobile video calls and video conferencing.
