An explosion rocked Pattani province yesterday, slightly injuring a soldier who was on patrol with two colleagues, police said.
Private Athit Tangkanjanakul was slightly wounded on his right hand after the bomb went off. It had been hidden under a pavilion on a roadside in Yarang district. Police believe two local dakwah missionaries triggered the bomb after taking cash donations from the soldiers as they were resting at the pavilion. The bomb exploded when the Muslims were only 50 metres away from the pavilion, police said. In a separate incident, a bomb exploded at a bridge in Narathiwat's Rangae district, shortly before the departure from a nearby village of Ukrit Mongkolnavin, the head of a commission to promote justice and liberty in the three border provinces. The bomb caused no casualties but damaged the bridge. Ukrit, a former Senate president, and his delegation needed to change their route to Pattani. Police said militants might have intended to harm Ukrit's party but miscalculated the time they would use the bridge. Violence in the deep South has claimed more than 1,300 lives since the beginning of 2004.
