Nectec gives Linux SIS a big push
To reduce software privacy and promote the use of open-source programs in the Kingdom, the National Electronics and Computer Technology Centre (Nectec) is working with system integrators and small and medium-sized businesses to adopt Linux SIS technology for their businesses.
Linux SIS is a Thai version of the Linux operating system for server platform. As it has been developed based on an open-source concept, it offers a free licence to users. Nectec director Thaweesak Koanantakool said the centre hoped it would encourage local businesses to use open-source software as a new alternative and help them reduce the cost of system implementation. He said that under the pilot project, Nectec would offer consulting and training on open-source technology and Linux SIS to the first 10 system integrators free of charge, which would enable them to adopt Linux SIS for further system implementation for their customers. "We want to push open source to SMEs as an alternative choice to legal software at an affordable price, and promote the use of open source to schools and SMEs," said Thaweesak. He said the month-long pilot project would promote and support local business and enable them to use legal software at an affordable price. The centre also hopes to encourage about 60 per cent of the total 20,000 Web servers in Thailand to use open-source software. "Earlier, we promoted the use of open-source software in schools, and now the plan has turned to focus on businesses as we believe the technology will help them cut costs while improving business efficiency," he said.
