Two people were shot dead and another was stabbed and burned alive yesterday in the South, according to police reports.
In the fist incident, Bua Nisorn, a 62-year-old former village head, was shot twice at his shop in Pattani's Panare district. A gunman asked to buy cigarettes and opened fire as Bua turned to get them. He died on the way to a hospital. The second shooting took place in neighbouring Narathiwat province when Mama-aslan Samoh, a 28-year-old chicken trader, was killed while riding a motorbike. His girlfriend, who was on the pillion, narrowly escaped. On Tuesday night, an elderly farmer was attacked while herding his cattle in Pattani province. Police said militants stabbed him and set his body on fire. There has been violence in the three southernmost provinces, including Yala, on an almost daily basis since the beginning of 2004. To date, more than 1,300 people have been killed. On Monday a teacher in Narathiwat was murdered in front of his class of primary school pupils. Psychologists were rushed to Ban Bue Rang in the province's Rusoh district to provide counselling for the 30 children who saw the brutal killing of their teacher. Psychologist Damrong Jeharee, director of the Southern Psychology Centre, said most of the children were recovering but some remained frightened and were in need of care from their parents. Local authorities have stepped up security measures to provide protection for teachers in the predominantly Muslim region.
