Spirit strong among teachers - Princess

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn says the primary years are the most important for children learning the Thai language.

She called for "highly effective" teaching at this level. It was essential for a life-long mastery of the national tongue.

"Effective teaching of the Thai language at primary school is most important. Learners will be able to master the language if they are taught in the most effective way at this time," she said.

Her Royal Highness delivered the opening address for National Thai Language Day yesterday.

The annual meeting was organised by the Association of Thai Language Teachers and the Education Ministry.

Her Royal Highness praised teachers' dedication.

"Be proud of yourself for helping develop human resources and the country," she said.

She referred to a Narathiwat teacher killed recently by suspected rebels during a Thai- language class.

"Teaching is not a last resort for those who cannot find other careers. There are still teachers who volunteer to work in remote or unsafe areas because they have the true teacher's spirit.

"They earn all our support," Her Royal Highness said.
