'Sufficiency' policies needed

Respected social thinker and champion of the poor Prawase Wasi yesterday insisted political parties adopt His Majesty the King's "sufficiency economy" theory in their election-campaign policy platforms.

Prawase believes the country needs a "Sufficiency Economy Act and more investment in a sufficiency economy".

He said such investment would spawn intellectual power, self-reliance and happiness.

The sufficiency economy theory embraces the "middle path" as a primary principle, he said. "Sufficiency" means moderation, reasonable consumption and resilience to external shocks and uncertainty.

Prawase recommend universities introduce post-graduate degree courses in the theory, turning out experts who would strengthen this path for the nation.

"A sufficiency economy will promote conscience and morality. We must stop asking how can we be rich? We must focus on how we can be good," Prawase said.

He said he proposed a similar idea to caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra in 2001.
