Lowest bid at expo auction wins a Yaris

Two honeys hover over the car that Hutchison-CAT will auction off at the International ICT Expo 2006, which starts August 2.
Cellular operator Hutchison-CAT (Hutch) will hold a "reverse auction" - in which the lowest and most unique bid wins the item - for a Toyota Yaris at Bangkok International ICT Expo 2006.

The expo runs from August 2-6 at Muang Thong Thani's Impact Exhibition Centre, while the reverse auction begins at midnight tonight.

Only Hutch mobile-phone subscribers may participate in the auction. They simply dial 91999 from anywhere to enter their bid.

Opening bids will be accepted for between 25 satang and Bt30,000. Callers will be told how many other bidders, if any, have entered the same amount.

The winner will be determined by the lowest yet most unique bid.

The auction begins at midnight tonight and ends at 6pm on August 5, with the winner to be announced on August 6 during a ceremony at the Hutch booth. Hutch offers cellular service using Code Division Multiple Access 2000 1-x technology, a rival to the predominant GSM system.

Inside the Yaris on display at the Hutch booth, the company will demonstrate its wireless high-speed Internet that it developed jointly with the King Mongkut University of Technology Lat Krabang.

The company will also introduce the latest Japanese technologies, including a mobile phone featuring the Mobile Optical Character Recognition (OCR) Dictionary application. The Mobile OCR phone, with built-in camera, can scan vocabulary and translate it immediately.

At the Hutch booth, visitors can also try out mobiles containing the new BebiQ application, which allows a user to "feed" virtual animals appearing on the screen by sweeping the phone over any barcode at hand.
