Surin girls killed by dengue

Two girls have died of dengue fever and another 638 people are sick from the mosquito-borne disease, which is spreading rapidly in Surin province, the local public health office said yesterday.

The districts of Sanom, Sangkha, Lamduan and Chom Phra and the sub-district of Sri Narong have reported a record number of dengue cases, health office chief Dr Khimhan Yongrattanakij said.

The highest number of cases of dengue - 106 - was reported in Sangkha district.

The two girls who died from the disease were aged nine and 15.

An effort is underway to eradicate mosquito larvae in water sources in order to minimise the spread of the disease, Khimhan said.

Insecticide would be sprayed in areas with a high density of mosquitoes, he said.
