Telecom companies gear up for Bangkok Int'l ICT Expo

AIS will show a set of gold refill cards entitled ‘Celebration of His Majesty the King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 60th Anniversary of Accession to the Throne’ at the ICT Expo 2006.
Thai tech buffs can look forward to exhibits of technology for a better life from cellular operators at the Bangkok International ICT Expo next week.

The fair, hosted by the Information and Communications Technology Ministry,

runs from August 2 to August 6 at Impact Exhibition and Convention Centre, Muang Thong Thani.

Advanced Info Service Plc (AIS) said its theme this year was technology that can enhance people's daily lives.

AIS spent Bt22 million on setting up its booth featuring a main zone to honour His Majesty the King, a special experience zone, and a privilege zone.

At the His Majesty the King Zone, AIS will show sets of gold refill cards which were designed to celebrate the auspicious occasion of His Majesty's 60th anniversary of his accession to the throne.

The highlight of its special zone is 3G broadband wireless technology, which is deployed to demonstrate video calls, melodies and conferences as well as digital-TV mobile phones.

AIS has teamed up with network suppliers such as Huawei Technologies and Ericsson along with Asian content developers to showcase the 3G technology.

AIS executives said the company expected 60,000 visitors daily at the booth during weekdays. Its marketing staff will also meet customers at the booth to learn directly about their needs.

Total Access Communication (DTAC) will showcase a wide array of services under the "Practical Modern Life" concept on its giant DTAC hi-tech cruise ship.

Its highlight is a Mobile ATM service, which enables customers to conduct simple and secure financial transactions on their mobile phones.

The company plans to launch the service commercially in the fourth quarter.

DTAC said the showcase would enforce its position as a provider of high technology that can truly be used in daily life.

True Corp, meanwhile, will showcase its technology under the concept "Digital Lifestyle" - technology that can be used to enhance daily life.

CAT Telecom will present the theme "Strengthen Your Communications" at its booth, divided into zones of 'CDMA Makes It Alive": e-market, multimedia, and e-government. Overseas calling cards will also be available at its market zone.

CAT's joint venture, Hutchison-CAT, has provided the Code Division Multimedia Access (CDMA) 2000 1-x high-speed cellular service in 25 provinces.

The theme of this year's ICT Expo is "Asia ICT Connection: Global Collaboration in ICT Trade, Investment and Development". The Expo aims to showcase the potential of Thailand for competition in ICT industries.

According to the ministry's latest release, space for the fair is now more than 60 per cent booked. About 250 companies are preparing exhibitions of their technologies.
