HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
Court to rule in EC malfeasance case

The Criminal Court is scheduled to deliver its ruling in the malfeasance case filed by Democrat Party deputy secretary-general Thaworn Senneam against the Election Commission (EC) tomorrow.
Thaworn said the EC commissioners had acted improperly when organising constituency elections on April 23. After the Royal Decree for a new general election was endorsed last week, the secretary-general of the embattled EC insisted that the three remaining commissioners would supervise the October 15 election, despite continued calls for them to resign. However, the court ruling might affect the legitimacy of the commissioners or people's trust in the EC, especially if the commissioners were found guilty.
Democrats to discuss candidates The Democrat Party's committee on selecting candidates for parliamentary elections will meet today to consider who will contest the upcoming election. Then on Wednesday, party secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban will meet the party's committee on political affairs to plan a strategy for the election.
Banharn, Thaksin to meet Eyes will also be on Chat Thai Party leader Banharn Silapa-archa when he returns from a trip to the US on Thursday, when he is expected to meet with caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Banharn said last week he would meet Thaksin to discuss a political reconciliation and find solutions to the current political chaos. Thaksin said Banharn agreed to meet him after he returned from the trip, but didn't specify when.
Ekachai wants registration dates set Election Commission (EC) secretary-general Ekachai Warunprapa said he would ask the EC to schedule the registration days for party-list and constituency MP candidates in the October 15 election today or tomorrow. A Cabinet resolution in May agreeing to set the election date for October 15 agreed to set the registration date for party-list MP candidates for September 5-7 and September 8-12 for constituency MP candidates. However, the EC must approve the dates before a registration announcement.
City poll complaints to be handed over Although the unofficial results of yesterday's Bangkok metropolitan councillors and district councillors elections were known last night, the local election commission office will still have to draw conclusions from its investigations into complaints surrounding the elections and present them to the Election Commission (EC) this week. The elections saw fierce competition between the main political parties, Thai Rak Thai and the Democrats. If approved by the EC, some elected candidates might receive yellow or red cards, meaning by-elections would need to be held.
