Hospital group's international focus

Prasit Patana Plc, the operator of three Phyathai Hospitals, is opening an office in Saudi Arabia today, to be followed by Oman, the United Arab Emirates and Burma, as it shifts its focus to the international market.
"We target countries in the Middle East as they have high purchasing power at the moment, but their public health systems are not that good," chairman Wichai Thongtang said last week. The Middle East is attractive because of its robust growth and high margins, he said. "Besides, our strength is in specialist therapy and our advanced technology equipment can attract patients. Our rates are also competitive." Overseas operations will contribute 15 per cent of the company's total revenues this year, up from less than 10 per cent last year. The proportion will be raised to 20 per cent next year, he added. The office in Burma is expected to be functioning soon, after the company completes its study of the regulations and laws there. The firm might also take a stake in a privately owned hospital in China. "We were approached to invest in Beijing but we have yet to make any decision because we have to analyse the risks carefully," Wichai said. The company expects Bt3.6 billion in revenue this year and Bt4 billion next year. Its net profit dropped sharply to Bt52.16 million in the first three months of the year from Bt108.75 million in the same quarter last year. The company's stock will resume trading late this year after its business has completed rehabilitation, he added.
