PM's mixed reception

Supporters and opponents of Thaksin Shinawatra were urged to stay calm yesterday when the prime minister visited Siriraj Hospital, where His Majesty the King is recovering from surgery.

On his arrival at about 1.20pm, Thaksin was greeted by well-wishers and booed by opponents, all of whom have been at Siriraj to wish the King a quick recovery.

As Thaksin was about to take a lift to seek an audience with the King, the situation became tense and noisy, prompting security personnel to urge supporters and opponents to stay calm.

Shortly afterwards, the caretaker premier returned to the ground floor and told reporters that he could not have an audience with the King yet but had been told by doctors that His Majesty was recovering well from spinal surgery.
