Judge refuses to be hurried

Constitution Court judge Jumpol na Songkhla yesterday rejected suggestions the October 15 election date had put pressure on the court's consideration of a case seeking the dissolution of five political parties.

Jumpol did, however, say he was not confident the court could reach a decision before the October 15 election.

He said that if the court ruled parties must be dissolved, then a prime minister elected through a dissolved party would have to be removed.

Thai Rak Thai Party faction leaders were yesterday confident the party would escape dissolution.

Thai Rak Thai believes the court will accept its argument that payments to small parties to run in the April election were made by deputy leader Thamarak Isarangura, and not the party itself.

Several new parties have been registered and could attract Thai Rak Thai members, should it be dissolved. These include the Farmers' Network of Thailand Party, the Seri Pracha Thai Party and the Rak Thai Party.
