Fresh row boils over Chiang Mai bus routes

Chiang Mai Municipality is battling private operators to win a concession to provide bus services to the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 International Horticultural Exposition.
The city wants to run buses on three new routes being introduced by the Chiang Mai Provincial Land Transportation office. The new routes include one covering the Arcade bus station to the Chiang Mai Night Safari and on to the Royal Flora site. Another route traverses the railway station to the exhibition site and on to the Wieng Kum Kam Archaeological Park and Chiang Mai Zoo. The municipality is seeking to buy buses from the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA). Exhibition officials considered hiring the BMTA to provide services on the three routes during the November to January 2007 show. "If the BMTA is selected, it will be easier and take less time. The municipality does not have enough buses and staff to cover the expanded routes, while the BMTA is experienced," said Panyapol Mongkoljaroen of Municipal Commerce Affairs. The concession winner will be announced in September.
