Probe is 'missing the point'

A top bureaucrat yesterday questioned the wisdom of a parallel government probe into the city's fire-fighting-equipment scandal.
Bangkok's deputy city clerk Anan Siripassaraporn suggested the Interior Ministry's investigation into the Bt6.68-billion deal was missing the point. There were accusations the deal to buy equipment from an Austrian company was plagued by corruption.Anan wondered why an Interior Ministry fact-finding committee planned to focus on a letter of credit issued for the purchase. That was the final step in the purchase process that started with a government-to-government agreement, he said. "Please look at the whole process," Anan said. Caretaker Deputy Interior Minister Sermsak Pongpanit announced the probe on Thursday.
