Thailand's south :Search in Pattani's Saiburi district turns up M-16, AK-47, magazines

A combined force of 500 soldiers, ground and police divers yesterday searched a forested area in Saiburi district of Pattani yesterday and found two assault rifles, one of which believed to be stolen from an Army camp in January 2004.

Police divers surfaced from a canal behind Sasana Withaya Pondok School with a M-16 and an AK-47 assualt rifles as well as a 30-round magazine after a half an hour search.

Police said the M-16 gun is believed to be stolen from Pileng army camp in Narathiwat in January 2004.

A search in the forest nearby turned up two pairs of sneakers, a set of clothing and three 30-round magazines for AK-47 believed to belong to the militants that attacked a strategic checkpoint in Tambon Krohbon on July 20, polkice added.

Police, however, did not make any arrest.

The three southernmost provinces have been plagued with the violence which re-emerged since January 2004 when more than 30 Muslim insurgents raided an army camp in Narathiwat and stole at least 300 pistols and rifles.
