EC role in city polls 'illegal'

A former Senate candidate yesterday asked the Administrative Court to nullify the upcoming Bangkok councillors' elections, saying the Election Commission (EC) had lost its legal status as two of its five seats were vacant.

Niphon Simprayoon claimed the EC's management of this Sunday's ballot for city and district councillors was illegal, as the law required the EC to have all five members before it could take responsibility for elections.

"But currently, the EC has only three members remaining," Niphon said. They are EC chairman Vasana Puemlarp and commissioners Prinya Nakchudtree and Virachai Naewboonnien.

The court will decide today whether to accept the complaint.
