Local rugby sevens gets a big boost

The Thai Rugby Union (TRU) will join forces with UBC to stage seven-a-side rugby events to find new talent for the national team, which is preparing for the Asian Games in December.
The TRU are organising competitions with the aim of giving Thai players a chance to improve their skills and promote the sport. The competitions will serve as selection trials for the TRU and the best players will be given the chance to represent their country at December's Asian Games. The seven-a-side players will be separated from the regular 15-a-side team players. The first of the tournaments will be the Thailand-Malaysia Traditional Competition, which will kick off on Saturday at the Royal Thai Army Stadium. Playing for the prestigious Vajiravudh Trophy, Thailand will field an all-Thai team in the match against the Malaysians, whose side includes three foreign players. The National Championships are next in the series of tournaments, with two events. The first is the Seven-a-Side To Doha Competition from July 25 to August 20, while the second is the Seven-a-Side Junior Rugby Tournament from July 28 to August 5. All the teams in both tournaments will compete in a group round-robin format and collect points. The winning team at each event will take home a trophy plus prize money of Bt50,000. All the matches will be played at the Royal Thai Army Stadium and will be televised live on UBC's SuperSport Action channel.
