SCG joins The Nation's education partnership

SCG Paper Co Ltd has joined The Nation's "Partnership in Education" programme, to give hundreds of Thai university students daily access to English-language news.

The paper and pulp unit of the Siam Cement Group will sponsor deliveries of The Nation to several hundred fourth-year university students for a period of one year. Toyota Motor Thailand Co Ltd was the pioneer sponsor of the project.

SCG Paper's president, Chaovalit Ekabut, welcomed the initiative, which he said, put emphasis on English-language learning and knowledge-driven human-resources development.

"The scheme will help to prepare a new generation of Thais for the wider world," he said.

"Thailand is soon going to open the new Suvarnabhumi Airport, which will help shift the country to another level; to become the centre of trade for the region," Chaovalit said.

"Before reaching that point, we need to concern ourselves with the importance of using English. If our people have good language skills, the country will be able to serve as an effective trade centre in this region.

"I believe this project by The Nation will help to push our people, especially the new generation of students, to have an interest in English and see its importance," he said.

The "Partnership in Education" programme aims to help students develop a familiarity with English by reading The Nation every day.

All news and features on local and international subjects from lifestyle to entertainment, arts, culture, sports, education, science, technology and business, as well as social and political affairs, will be presented in a format suitable for young-generation readers.

Students to benefit from the programme will be selected by faculty members at various universities. Copies of The Nation will be delivered to their homes or campuses.

Chaovalit said fourth-year students will soon be joining the labour market. They are at a stage where they need to pay attention to global issues, and this will help them to enter the business world and become quality personnel for the sake of the country.

He said he wanted to see other companies join The Nation's "Partnership in Education" project and thereby join the effort to make an impact on Thai youngsters.
