US nod for Tharoor at UN

The United States and Germany have agreed to consider supporting India's candidate Shashi Tharoor for the position of United Nations secretary-general, the United News of India (UNI) reported yesterday.

UNI said the assurances were given to Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh when he met US President George W Bush and German Chancellor Angela Merkel separately on Monday during a G8 summit in Russia.

The Thai candidate, Deputy Prime Minister Surakiart Sathirathai, spoke of his vision of UN reform, the major subject of discussion by members, in New York two weeks ago. Surakiart has been endorsed by Asean and the regional group believes the next UN supremo should be an Asian.

The continent's list of candidates include former Sri Lankan Ambassador to the UN Jayantha Danaphala, and former South Korean foreign minister Ban Ki-moon.
