Politics slow ADB bond effort

Political uncertainty has affected cooperation between the government and the Asian Development Bank (ADB).
The political impasse has put the brakes on some areas of cooperation in developing the bond market, preventing it from expanding further, said James Lynch, deputy head of mission of ADB's Thailand office, at a Fiscal Policy Office seminar yesterday. Officials at the Finance Ministry have complained that cooperation between the government and the ADB in developing the bond market have progressed at a much slower pace than in previous years. Jean-Pierre Verbiest, director for ADB's Thailand office, said that the ADB is waiting for market conditions to improve before issuing another batch of baht-denominated bonds worth at least Bt4 billion. The ADB is waiting for the right condition of the market, he said.
