Bt1 bus-fare hike approved

The Transport Ministry will allow an increase in public bus fares in response to the latest rise in diesel prices last week.
A joint meeting between the ministry, the Transport Co Ltd and the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) agreed that fares on buses run by the BMTA and its contracted private operators would increase by Bt1. Fares on inter-city buses operated by the Transport Co will be raised by 3 satang per kilometre. The fare hike is expected to receive final approval today at a meeting of the Central Committee on Land Transport, caretaker Deputy Transport Minister General Chaiyanand Charoensiri said. "The ministry has to allow the operators to adjust the fares, given the rising price of fuel," he said. Early last week, the price of diesel rose to Bt28.34 a litre.
