Netgadgets aims to assist fleet managers with device to keep track of vehicle movements

Netgadgets, a local technology company, has developed a new "telematics" device for fleet-management companies in Thailand. It is being heralded as a new way to manage vehicles and logistical services.

Telematics is a wireless communication system that collects and disseminates information. It includes a vehicle-based electronic system, vehicle tracking and positioning, online vehicle navigation and information system, and emergency assistance. The system can be used to efficiently manage a fleet companies' trucks, buses or ships. The company's managing director, Pornthep Narula, said the device, called TraxG, fits in a box and is installed inside a vehicle. It communicates wirelessly with a central office and relays back to the centre information on the location and status of a vehicle while on the road.

TraxG has two key functions: a data locker and a communications gateway. The data locker is embedded with sensors including a global positioning system (GPS) to track the vehicle's location, acceleration sensor and temperature sensor, to check the overall status of the vehicle. This information will be kept in the locker for later analysis, such as the driver's behaviour while on the road and the use of the vehicle.

Pornthep said the device could also store information in a mobile phone's SIM card for wireless communication, making it easy to send information to the central office in real time. The company will work with local system integrators to create the telematics system.

Pornthep said the system would support logistics management, fleet management, route planning as well as confirmation of delivery.
