General 'to stay'

General Ruangroj Mahasaranont, the supreme commander, yesterday brushed aside speculation that General Sondhi Boonyaratglin would be removed from his current post as the Army's commander-in-chief.

Gen Ruangroj said Gen Sondhi had done nothing wrong in resolving southern violence and was still the appropriate person to head the Army.

Gen Ruangroj, who is retiring as supreme commander, said Gen Sondhi still had one more year to go in his post and should be supported to complete his service.

Earlier, speculation was rife that Gen Sondhi would lose his powerful post and become the next supreme commander in a reshuffle of the military's top brass due later this year.

Thaksin Shinawatra, the caretaker premier, yesterday also dismissed speculation that he was planning to sack Gen Sondhi, the first Muslim soldier to lead the Army.
