Police hero killed by bike thief

A decorated policeman was stabbed to death yesterday morning as he chased a bicycle thief.

According to Phra Samut Chedi police superintendent Colonel Cherdchai Sornsilpa, Pol Senior Sgt-Major Chalermchat Janthip was killed as he tried to arrest the suspect.

Chalermchat was rushed to Police General Hospital about 10am but later pronounced dead.

Cherdchai said Paithoon Janma, 23, was believed to have stabbed Chalermchat in the heart.

Chalermchat had responded to a report of bicycle theft at the Phra Samut Chedi Pier. He shot Paithoon once in the knee.

Paithoon was later found to possess drug paraphernalia.

Just last month Chalermchai was named one of Phra Samut Chedi Police Station's most outstanding officers.
