Prosecutors to review Sukhumvit land verdict

Public prosecutors will study the court verdict in detail before deciding whether to appeal in the Sukhumvit Square beer bar demolition case, a senior attorney at the Southern Bangkok Criminal Court said yesterday.
Former Chat Thai MP Chuwit Kamolvisit and some 130 associates were acquitted on Thursday of charges of damaging property, intrusion and illegal detention. The court sentenced Nickel Company lawyer Chanvej Malaibucha to eight months in jail for his part in the demolition of the Bangkok entertainment area in 2003. Senior prosecutor Sansern Niyomsindhu said the case had a team of eight prosecutors who would have to study the verdict in detail. However, since this case had more than 20 plaintiffs - in this case 103 - they could appeal the case themselves. Meanwhile, Chuwit said it was the prosecutors' jobs to decide if they would appeal and he would just be fighting a court battle if they did. Chuwit said he had bought the Sukhumvit Square property because it was a good price at Bt200,000 per square metre and he was able to borrow up to 95 per cent of the price from a bank. He knew the property came with bars and shops and he then sublet the area to tenants. Chuwit urged this case to be a lesson to property owners that they should check tenants' history and what they did with properties, not just aim for high rental income. He said he could not be responsible for Bt103 million in compensation requested by the plaintiffs since he was not guilty of charges.
