Rectors to reflect on academic dichotomy

Next week's world conference of university presidents will promote diversity and harmonisation in higher education worldwide, the Higher Education Commission said yesterday.
More than 1,000 presidents, vice presidents, rectors and high-ranking officials from 80 countries will participate in the four-day conference that begins on Wednesday, Pavich Tongroach, the commission's secretary-general, told a press conference yesterday. The theme of the conference - "Reflections on Diversity and Harmonisation" - is inspired by His Majesty the King's efforts to turn diversity into social harmony, and conflicts into understanding and cooperation, Pavich said. Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will preside over the opening ceremony at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. Experts on politics, commerce and education will deliver speeches. Lord Christopher Patten, chancellor of Oxford University, will talk on "Global Challenges and Opportunities for Higher Education in the 21st Century". Edward De Bono will speak on "21st Century Learning Needs and the Role of Higher Education".
