Documents for stateless teacher

A music lecturer who has no citizenship has obtained the travel documents and special visa she needed to take her Thai students to the Choir Olympics in China.
"I'm thrilled. I hope our band can win a medal and bring honour to Thailand," Aryu Namthep, 50, said yesterday. More than 200 bands from 47 countries will compete in the Choir Olympics from July 22 to July 27. Aryu, who leads the Payap Sacred Music band, has taught music at Payap University for 26 years. Many of her students are now professional singers, including Mukpong Jantornwong and Dodge of the "Bogie Dodge" duo. Aryu was born shortly before her parents emigrated from Burma to Thailand and her birth was never registered. Earlier this month, academics appealed for her to be granted citizenship or given documentation that would allow her to travel to China. The Interior Ministry will review Aryu's status tomorrow, said an official who declined to be named.
