PAD may rally at TRT headquarters after all

Alliance has yet to decide on venue for protest; Sanam Luang still top choice
The anti-Thaksin People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) is keeping everyone guessing about where this Friday's protest will take place. PAD coordinator Suriyasai Katasila initially said protesters would march from Sanam Luang to Government House but now he is suggesting they may assemble at Thai Rak Thai headquarters on New Petchburi Road to disrupt the party's founding day celebrations. It is still undecided where the anti-government alliance should meet but Suriyasai said Sanam Luang remained the first choice. A final decision is expected at a press conference today. "This protest is a constitutional right and previous PAD rallies have been peaceful," Suriyasai said. He expressed surprise that the Thai Rak Thai Party was planning a protest to counter the PAD demonstrators. Suriyasai condemned as mudslinging the Thai Rak Thai allegation that one of the PAD's five leaders, Maj-General Chamlong Srimuang, wanted blood spilt on Friday to spark an anti-Thaksin uprising. "Is rioting what Thai Rak Thai wants?" he asked. Deputy Thai Rak Thai Party spokesman Suthin Klangsaeng said he did not believe the protesters would gather at his party's headquarters, saying the move would be unacceptable to most people. Suthin said no special preparations for the protest were being made, while celebrations were ready for the party's founding day. Meanwhile, Somkiat Pongpaiboon, another PAD leader, said caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra was at the end of his political career because he had dared to mention an unnamed "charismatic figure" and was keen to develop his own "Thaksin ideology". Speaking in Nakhon Ratchasima yesterday, Somkiat said people would not put up with Thaksin and he would be ousted in a popular revolt. The Ministry of Interior is apparently mobilising about 80,000 villagers from across the nation to gather in Pattaya on Monday and Tuesday to honour His Majesty's 60 years on the throne. Sources say no programme has been produced but Thaksin will be addressing the gathering, which will cost about Bt40 million. Bamrung Kayotha, a northeastern administrator, said he would not be joining the event because the controversial Dhammakaya Buddhist sect is due to take part. A ruling party spokesman dismissed talk that the gathering in Pattaya would be used to mobilise pro-Thaksin supporters against the PAD.
