The Thai Rak Thai Party yesterday accused the Democrat-controlled Bangkok administration of resorting to dirty tactics to win the July 23 municipal elections.
The party claimed it was being prevented from campaigning effectively. Thai Rak Thai spokesman Sita Divari claimed city police had removed party campaign posters. He alleged they had been ordered to do so by their Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) bosses. He showed video of BMA officials allegedly caught in the act of removing campaign posters. The party would lodge a complaint with the police. It had already informed the Election Commission that Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin had asked voters to support Democrat candidates. Apirak is also a deputy Democrat leader. As governor he is prohibited from doing so. Sita also claimed Bt100 million in BMA funds had been diverted to the city's 50 district offices to help Democrat candidates. Thai Rak Thai member Jakraphob Penkhae accused the city administration of abusing its power to aid Democrat candidates. "We want city and district councils to examine BMA actions. I urge [the Democrats] to play by the rules and refrain from cheating," he said.
