Low-cost package tours to boost domestic tourism

To boost domestic travel, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in alliance with various tour and travel associations, is offering special travel packages to seven tourist destinations around the Kingdom at Bt6,660 each.
These are available through any of the 272 members of three participating travel organisations: the Association of Domestic Travel (ADT), Thai Ecotourism and the Association of Thai Tour Operators. Thai Airways International Plc will participate in the promotion by slashing fares 35 per cent on tickets purchased through members. ADT president, Charoen Wangananont said stimulating industry growth was imperative, because the political unrest and rising oil prices have caused domestic tourism to plummet 70 per cent. He expects the campaign to net around 5,000 package sales. The seven travel packages cover Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket, Krabi, Hat Yai, Udon Thani and Ubon Ratchathani. The Bt6,660 price tag includes round-trip airfare, two nights' accommodation on a twin-share basis, airport transfers, insurance and fuel surcharges. Customers can combine optional tours at each destination for an additional fee. All packages involve daily departures but require booking seven days in advance. The offer is valid to September 30.
