Courts are the nation's only hope: Kanin

Thailand can now only rely on the country's top courts to prevent a national crisis, said former Constitution drafter Kanin Boonsuwan yesterday.
He said the Constitution, Supreme and Administrative courts served as the only hope for the Kingdom as the Election Commission appeared to have lost its independence and neutrality. Kanin said the courts could help prevent a crisis by making appropriate rulings in the political cases. He added that the Supreme Court could sentence the election commissioners to jail, the Constitution Court might order the dissolution of Democrat and Thai Rak Thai parties, and the Administrative Court could annul the status of Thaksin Shinawatra as caretaker prime minister. Kanin said the three remaining members of the Election Commission have lost public trust for them to hold more general elections, after the April 2 snap polls were declared unlawful by the courts. He said it appeared the election commissioners were siding with the ruling political party while being at odds with the three former main opposition parties.
