Women with a wealth of experience

There is more to the society women who took on caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra last week than their lineage.
Sumalee Viravaidhya, for example is a columnist for the Bangkok Post and former charter drafter. Born in 1938 to Dr Samak and Dr Ella Viravaidhya, Sumalee attended Mater Dei School and graduated from Indiana University in the United States. She was one of 18 women on the Constitution drafting committee established by former prime minister Sanya Dharmasakti after he came to power following the 1973 student-led uprising. For her part, ML Anong Ninoubon has played a key role in the development of the country's women's movement. The 88-year-old retired civil servant is the daughter of Nart Chumsai na Ayutthaya. She studied at Chulalongkorn University. Anong has attended numerous international women's summits and is the executive member of several international women's groups. She is a former deputy president and secretary-general of National Women's Council.
