Volunteer shot dead in South

Soldiers examine a jeep that was hit by a bomb during a night patrol in Pattani on Saturday. Four out of seven soldiers who were riding on the jeep were injured by the blast believed to be triggered by a mobile telephone.
A defence volunteer was shot dead in Chanae district yesterday morning by suspected insurgents, police said.

Masaki Manoh, 27, was shot five times at close range at about 7am while riding his motorcycle on a road near Ipradah village in Chang Phuek tambon, Lieutenant Boonserm Klaewathee of Chanae district police station said.

Boonserm said Masaki was on the way to pick up his wife from a rubber plantation when he was killed.

Separatist violence has flared in the South since the beginning of 2004, prompting a harsh response from the government. More than 1,300 people have been killed in the region since then.
