IN BRIEF
Royal photo : BMA to distribute 200,000 posters of HM the King at City Hall today

The chance to get free posters of His Majesty the King from the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will end this evening.

Some 200,000 poster-size pictures of the King standing on the main balcony of the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall on June 9 will be distributed today from 8.30am to 4.30pm at City Hall to people who sign a well-wishing message for His Majesty.

Yesterday 50,000 desktop-size pictures and 100,000 name-card pictures were distributed.

Since July 4, 600,000 pictures have been given away. BMA said more pictures would be published if requested, particularly by private companies and state agencies.

Pathum Thani : Warrants for burglars and rapist

The Thanyaburi Court issued arrest warrants late Friday night for three men and one woman suspected of involvement in a burglary on Tuesday in which a German woman and her 13-year-old daughter were raped.

Lt-Colonel Jeerachai Yensuang, Thanyaburi district deputy police chief, identified one of the suspects as Charnnarong Kongsiri, 26, a former employee of the German woman's husband. The other three suspects are Charnnarong's father, his cousin and his cousin's wife.

Jeerachai said the four suspects were identified by the German woman. He said district police yesterday travelled to the home province of the suspects, Nakhon Ratchasima, and were expected to arrest them soon.

Initially, the German woman told police that only her daughter had been raped, but later revealed that she had been raped as well.

Strategic retreat : PM stirs up controversy, takes break

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra yesterday escaped the political heat to take his family to a luxury resort on Koh Chang.

After spending much of the day on the beach in Pattaya, Thaksin, his wife Pojaman and his daughters Pinthongta and Paethongtarn went on to the island in Trat province late in the afternoon.

Today they will move on to nearby Koh Kood.

The public meanwhile is clamouring for him to name the "charismatic person beyond the Constitution" who is supposedly seeking his permanent ouster from politics.

Thaksin originally planned to watch the World Cup finals in Germany over the long holiday.

He refused any interviews.
