Vasana will resign if ...

Election Commission chairman Vasana Puemlarp yesterday offered to resign if the Supreme Court nominates candidates to fill two vacant EC seats.

"I am willing to pledge my resignation in writing and will depart as soon as two new EC members assume office," he said.

Vasana said he wanted the body to have a full quota of five members. Should he then resign, the four remaining members could manage EC tasks with little difficulty.

He admitted his pledge may be taken by some as "tongue-in-cheek", considering demands that all remaining EC members should stand down to allow the judiciary to restore credibility to the electoral process.

"I am not trying to challenge the Supreme Court. I have a work backlog. It prevents me from leaving office until the EC can achieve a quorum and continue without me," he claimed.
