Beaten teacher's condition worsens

The condition of a teacher fighting for her life in a Narathiwat hospital has worsened, doctors said yesterday.

Juling Pangamoon has been in a coma since being beaten by a mob of Muslim villagers in mid-May.

Prince of Songkhla Hospital doctors reported yesterday that Juling's blood pressure had dropped and she was suffering from a lung infection.

"The latest evaluation shows her general condition has not improved. She is still unconscious and depends on an artificial respiratory system," they said in a statement.

A team of psychiatrists is also caring for Juling's parents, who have been at her bedside since the attack.

The 24-year-old teacher and a colleague were held hostage by an angry mob at Narathiwat's Ai Ba Thu village. Some 300 villagers were demanding the release of two suspected Muslim rebels arrested earlier the same day over the killing of two marines last year.

Juling has been in intensive care ever since the brutal drama.
