Call to close park road

A road running through Ang-ruanai Wildlife Sanctuary, which has been used as a shortcut to the Thai-Cambodia border for years, should be closed because it is dangerous to wildlife, said the head of the sanctuary.
Yoo Senatham said his proposal was based on research conducted by Chachoengsao Wildlife Research Centre. In 1999, more than 14,000 animals were found dead on the road, about 13,000 of which were amphibians and reptiles. Also killed were 297 mammals and 164 birds. In 2001, two elephants were killed on the road. Last year a motorcyclist was injured in an elephant attack. Yoo said that if the road, which links Chachoengsao's Tha Takiab sub-district and Sa Kaew's Wang Nam Yen district, cannot be permanently closed, it should at least close at night. He said the report showed that 78 per cent of accidents took place from 6-8pm and 22 per cent happened from 8 pm-1am. The road is the shortest route from the Central region to the border in Sa Kaew's Klong Hat district. If it were closed, commuters would have to travel via Kabin Buri in Prachin Buri province.
