Villagers in hiding as suspect gets bail

There was anger and controversy in Sa Kaew yesterday after the local court allowed the nephew of politician Snoh Thienthong to be freed on bail of Bt300,000 following his arrest on Wednesday for allegedly conspiring to kill a village headman.

Saengpratheep Thienthong, 47, was arrested after a car bombing on Monday, which seriously injured the headman's son.

Police believe the target of the bomb was the injured man's father, Chaochaiwat Chaviniramol, who is leads a group protesting against a dumpsite belonging to Professional Waste Technology, which Snoh's nephew holds shares in.

Sa Kaew Police deputy chief Colonel Payap Thongcheun said officers would be sent to

provide security to the protesters, especially Chaochaiwat.

There was anger about the court agreeing to releasing Saengpratheep. One protester outside the plant said the bail approval prompted 20 leading protesters to stay away from their homes due to fears about their safety.

Chaochaiwat said details on the bail conditions showed that Wattana Nakhon police holding the suspect did not submit any documents objecting to the bail request, or filed reports from four witnesses, as ordered by senior police.
