Talks urged on N Korea

Thailand will join an effort by the international community to push communist North Korea to return to six-party talks on nuclear disarmament, caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra said yesterday.

"I told North Korea's ambassador to Bangkok [O Yong Son] that as a friend, Thailand wanted North Korea to return to talks," Thaksin told reporters.

The six-nation talks over Pyongyang's nuclear programme ended in November when the North Koreans objected to US sanctions. The other countries in the talks were South Korea, China, Japan, Russia and the US.

Thaksin was reacting to Pyongyang's decision to conduct long-range missile tests yesterday. - The Nation
