IN BRIEF
Vietnam to export 5 million tonnes of rice worth $1.4 bn

Vietnam will export 5 million tonnes of rice this year, down 200,000 tonnes from last year, reports that country's Trade Ministry.
Export revenues, however, are expected to reach US$1.4 billion (Bt53.2 billion), equal to last year. Vietnam is the world's second-largest rice exporter, after Thailand. Rice exporters have been told to look to Asia-Pacific countries, where demand is expected to rise because of inclement weather. During the first half of the year, Vietnamese rice exporters shipped 2.93 million tonnes of rice abroad, earning export turnover of $796 million, up 7 per cent over the same period last year. The price of rice exports has risen in the last six months, with 5-per-cent broken rice climbing to $270 a tonne and 25-per-cent broken rice to $250 to $255 a tonne. Vietnam recently agreed to export an additional 100,000 tonnes of rice to the Philippines, bringing rice exports to that country to 1.6 million tonnes so far this year. - Viet Nam News/ANN.
M'sian glass-maker goes abroad The Glass Division of Malaysia's Fraser & Neave Holdings Bhd (F&N) plans to increase exports, in order to drive business growth, says general manager Mogan Muniandy. "We plan to increase exports to 40 per cent of total revenues in two years, compared with the current 30 per cent," he said. F&N operates a plant in Thailand that is a joint venture between Malaya Glass Products Sdn Bhd (a wholly owned subsidiary of F&N), Thai Asia Pacific Brewery Co Ltd and Siam Glass Industry Co Ltd. Malaya Glass owns 70 per cent of the plant. "Exports are very important to us, as the Malaysian market is relatively small," said Muniandy, adding that the division currently controlled 85 per cent of the local glass-packaging market. At present, the division's top three export markets are the Philippines, Australia and the US. - The Star/ANN.
