PAD: Police working for

The People's Alliance for Democracy will not respond today to a police summons to question them over their involvement in anti-Thaksin street protests.
The Law Society of Thailand is expected to assign a lawyer to represent the Alliance's eight members and supporters in regard to the police proceedings. "The PAD will resort to civil disobedience when dealing with police because it sees the summons as an example of arbitrary law enforcement," PAD spokesman Suriyasai Katasila said yesterday. Suriyasai said police were acting like hatchet men for caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. He said the Alliance would meet tomorrow to assess the political situation. "The PAD is concerned about increased tension after Thaksin made a veiled attack against a 'charismatic, extra-constitutional' figure," he said. Divisions caused by the PM were likely to deepen if he goes ahead with forming a group called 'Friends of Thaksin' to thwart his opponents, Suriyasai warned. Senator-elect Rosana Tositrakul said police were unfair in seeking to fault the PAD while omitting to probe Thaksin's alleged offences. Outgoing Senator Karun Saingam said 19 complaints had been filed against Thaksin yet police had made little investigative headway. Karun said the Alliance might have to make weekly checks on the police's performance to pressure them into doing their work properly. The Nation
