Crowds queue for free royal pics

Crowds gathered yesterday at a public plaza to receive pictures of His Majesty the King published and provided free by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA).
Some people showed up at Larn Khon Muang as early as 4am to receive the famous picture featuring the King waving from the main balcony of Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall to a large crowd at the nearby Royal Plaza on June 9. Bangkok Governor Apirak Kosayodhin asked people to take only one picture each. A total of 400,000 pictures in name-card size were given out in orderly fashion to members of the public, who were asked to sign a well-wishing message for the King. Another 100,000 prints of the picture, produced for desktop display, will be given away today from 8am to 4.30pm. The final 100,000 pictures, in poster format, will be handed out tomorrow. The BMA is considering printing more pictures after determining the most popular format. Bangkok deputy governor Buddhipongse Punakanta said the pictures might be given away at weekends following requests by people who said they were busy on weekdays. Nitchamon Phiphatweerawat, 40, who came to Larn Khon Muang in a wheelchair with her young sister's help, said she wanted to sign a message for the King and receive a photograph. She said he was her role model and inspired her with his dedication and hard work.
