Moves to contain dengue fever

Bangkok officials will spray insecticide in all 50 districts after a high number of dengue fever cases in Lat Phrao.
The spraying will start on July 14 and continue in the second week of every month, Chakkrapan Pornnimit, deputy spokesman for Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, said on Tuesday. The BMA's public health office reported to its executive meeting yesterday that, from January 1 to June 24, the city's 110 private and public hospitals reported 2,203 cases of suspected dengue fever. Of these, 1,984 were diagnosed with the disease and three people died - they were from Suan Luang, Ratchathewi and Nong Khaem districts. But this was still below last year's (12month) tally of 5,199 patients and 11 deaths, Chakkrapan said. Khunying Nathanon Thavisin, BMA permanent secretary, expressed concerned at the meeting that Lat Phrao district suffered high rates of dengue fever because the area was inundated after rain, making it a great incubating ground for mosquitoes and larva. The BMA's public health office will meet the Public Health Ministry on tomorrow to discuss efforts to contain the disease. The city will also invest Bt1.15 million to provide free health checkups for about 345,000 stuŽdents at its 433 schools from next month until February. The Nation
