'Decision to quit was mine'

Former Cabinet secretary-general Borwornsak Uwanno yesterday disputed a claim by his former boss, Thaksin Shinawatra, that his decision to resign early last month was influenced by "a charismatic figure outside of the system".

Borwornsak said he did not mention anyone when he handed his resignation to the caretaker premier on June 6.

He insisted that nobody had asked him to quit. Borwornsak, who was briefly ordained as a Buddhist monk last month, said he did meet Privy Council president Prem Tinsulanonda after he left the government, in order to tell him about his imminent ordination.

Borwornsak was speaking by phone from China, where he is on an educational tour.
