Sex assault conviction challenged

A former civil servant yesterday lodged an appeal to overturn a verdict that had found him guilty of sexually molesting a flight attendant and two passengers.
Earlier this year, the Criminal Court sentenced Charnchai Pijitpakdeekul, 74, to a fine of Bt15,000 and a 15-month imprisonment term, suspended for two years. The Office of the Attorney-General considered the sentence too light and appealed to have Charnchai jailed. Yesterday, Charnchai's son Jompoj and lawyer Paiboon Bua-noi lodged the appeal on behalf of Charnchai, who has maintained his innocence. Paiboon cited conflicting statements by Charnchai's alleged victims as grounds for the appeal. Paiboon said Charnchai had already sworn before the highly revered Emerald Buddha and the City Pillar Shrine that he had done nothing wrong.
