More rice strains from CP

The Charoen Pokphand Group says that it has successfully created two new rice strains with shorter harvest life and higher yields of 1,600-1,700 kilograms per rai.
Anek Silapaphan, vice president for research and development, said the new cross-breeding rice strains are named Number 304 and 357 and will enable farmers to enjoy shorter harvesting times of 90 and 110 days respectively. The company gave these hybrid breeds to farmers to grow in the central region's irrigated areas. Farmers have enjoyed higher yields of 1,600-1,700 kilograms per rai. Moreover, the second-generation crop still yields 700-800 kilograms per rai. Anek said the new breed is a 7-millimetre, long-grain rice with high quality. Production costs are Bt4,000 per rai compared to Bt2,800 for current breeds with a harvest life of 110-120 days and average production of 500-600 kilograms per rai. "Farmers will have higher production costs per rai but will enjoy double yields and income. Moreover, the shorter harvest life will allow farmers to grow short-life crops to increase their income," he said.
