Premier off to World Cup final

Caretaker Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra will fly to Berlin to attend the World Cup final on June 9, Chaipak Siriwat, the secretary-general of the Lawn Tennis Association of Thailand, said yesterday.

Chaipak, an adviser to caretaker Deputy Prime Minister Suwat Liptapanlop, said Thaksin had been invited to watch the match by Franz Beckenbauer, chairman of the World Cup organising committee.

Thaksin will leave Thailand on June 7. If he has time, the embattled premier would also attend the third-place play-off. Chaipak said Thaksin had a VIP ticket, which gave him access to any match. Chaipak and Suwat were also invited by Beckenbauer to watch the final.
